are we in london??????

first day of the our first weekend in london - oops, i mean doha (hehe) and all we have is rain!!! we didn't think it actually rained in the desert!?! as i packed our 'brollies' in our suitcase back in london i actually hesitated thinking they would probably be a complete waste of space. man, was i wrong! mike woke this morning at 6:30am to a total downpour and it continued to rain all day off and on.
and their 2 children. mike knew the guys from his previous job back in t.o. we ended up spending the later part of the afternoon at the i slept in again this morning (i still can't seem to shake the jet lag) then mike and i headed off to the gym - a perfect way to spend a rainy day. after our workouts we met up with the fellow canadian families who are now residing in doha. aside from scott and joanne, there is mike, nicole and their 3 children and ryan, jen and their 2 children. we ended up spending the later part of the afternoon at the souq waqif which is an old arabic market that used to be a weekend trading area for the bedouins. today, it is a labyrinth of alleyways lined with shops selling spices, dried fruit, nuts, perfume, traditional incense, etc. scott described the souq in an interesting way saying that it is like lundy's lane in niagara falls - a place you must visit but is quite tacky once you start taking a good look around. since friday is the holy day they often have live musicians and activities for the children (such as donkey rides, etc). you can also enjoy shisha smoking (water pipe with flavoured tobacco) at the arabic cafes - something i have yet to try but look forward in doing so...
