our new borough market?

this morning i was up and dressed by 8:30am...in preparation for our visit to the fruit and vegetable souq!! it didn't take us long to get to the other side of town right near the 'wholesale roundabout'. here we entered the land of the souqs - the fish souq, agriculture souq, livestock souq and the fruits and veg souq. we didn't feel like picking up a goat today so we made a stop at the fruits and veg souq. now, this was impressive - silly me for worrying about leaving borough market behind!! the souq was located within a contained wall. of course, you had the option to pay a man to follow behind you with a wheel barrel to help carry your purchases - here they seem to have a person for everything! once inside there were tons of stalls filled with every kind of fruit and veg imaginable! it was one of the most colourful settings i have ever seen - i wish i had my camera with me. we wandered from stall to stall politely declining the numerous invitations to come peruse each stall's produce. it all looked so fresh which made it a difficult decision who to buy from. furthermore, they all looked as though they were having a slow day. as a result, we tried our best to spread our business around.
i left with 3 bags full of grapes, plums, nectarines, romaine lettuce, pineapple and bananas for about 70 QAR which is about 10 GBP/ 5 CDN!!! what a deal - it is going to be hard to go back buying from a grocer! however, i would imagine the souq experience wouldn't be as pleasant during the hot 'summer' months with the lack of air conditioning. today it was hot enough - but i guess it is all part of the adventure!

i did keep looking for the giant 'pyramid' of chocolate brownies, the barrels of olives, compte cheese and the monmouth coffee stand...i guess it's not like borough market after all :(
